November Learning Session

Engagement Feedback Results

  • How can we increase the value of the QI Portal?
  • Portal Summaries
  • Discussion around providing monthly portal summaries (e.g., center rankings by metric through monthly extracts).
  • Consideration of whether summaries may be more useful on a quarterly basis instead of monthly.
  • Recommendation that communications include an educational component, such as:
    • Step-by-step guidance on how centers can review their own data.
    • Instructions for comparing center-level data with collaborative benchmarks.
    • Discussion about spacing out password reset requirements for users. Password Change Requirements

    • Data Mapping and Visualization Challenges
  • Feedback that data mapping continues to be a barrier.
  • Some centers continue to struggle with generating graphs and effectively using their own center data.
  • Participants noted they are still not maximizing the platform’s capabilities.

Committee Changes

  • Thank you to Drs. Vendrame and Demeterco-Berggren for their leadership and contributions to the Clinical Leadership Committee.
  • Announcement that the Data Governance and Data Science committees will merge after June 1.

Current Project Updates

  • BPA Updates (Presented by Drs. Mathioudakis and Wolf)
  • The group has reached a point where analysis of the BPA’s impact can begin.
  • Goal is to increase AID adoption and reduce disparities.
  • Early data suggest narrowing gaps and meaningful progress toward equity goals.
  • Discussion around minimizing BPA fatigue.
  • Clarification that the BPA will not fire for patients already using devices.
  • Interested centers should reach out to Dr. Mathioudakis and Wolf directly
    • Particularly for the Epic build

White Paper Updates (Drs. Broome and DeSalvo)

  • Updates provided regarding the white paper and publication in Endocrine Practice.
  • The white paper is intended to serve as a practical “playbook” for addressing common questions.
  • Participants were encouraged to share the document broadly with colleagues.

  • Continued emphasis on disseminating and publishing T1DX-QI results, including longitudinal data analyses.

Mentorship

  • Desire to create additional mentorship opportunities across the collaborative.

Health Equity

  • Commitment to ensuring health equity remains foundational to interventions and outcome measures.

Data and Infrastructure Priorities

Data Mapping

Key Questions

  • How can data mapping become easier and more sustainable?
  • How can data measure definitions be easier for clinics to implement and adapt to?
  • Can we negotiate conversations with Epic (Dexcom, Abbott, Tidepool, Glooko, etc) to have better diabetes infrastructure in their EMR?
  • How can we integrate diabetes device data into EMRs and our data specification more easily?

Challenges Identified

  • Ongoing changes in data capture methods across systems.
  • Limited IT resources and funding at many centers.
  • Need for approaches that reduce burden on IT professionals.

Potential Solutions Discussed

  • Considering centralized source data approaches.
  • Exploring crowd-sourced solutions for data support.
  • Developing lighter-lift implementation strategies.
  • Increasing collaboration and advocacy efforts with:
    • ADA
    • Helmsley
    • Epic

Platform Integration

  • Discussion about understanding which centers currently have — or are working toward — integration across different platforms within Epic.

Additional Note

  • Approximately 95% of T1DX centers use Epic.
