  • Welcome to new members, Becca Campbell and Claire Zimmerman
  • Committee Charter has been updated for 2024. Thank you, everyone, for your feedback. New language appears on website; use this link to view the Advisory Committee Charter
  • Committee Co-Chairs
    • Co-Chair role is two year term. Committee is looking for nominations for two new chairs, to begin role in June 2024
    • Primary responsibilities include facilitating meetings, helping to lead direction and aims for the group, representing Committee across Collaborative meetings, such as the learning sessions
    • Use this link to submit nomination
  • Discussion of diabetes use of language
    • Committee is setting aim to help T1DX “walk the walk and talk the talk” in the language we use re: diabetes to empower people; to be respectful; and to remove fear, judgement, and blame.
    • Group reviewed language recommendations that can be found in Jane Dickinson’s paper, “The Use of Language in Diabetes Care.” Discussion included challenges, goals/opportunities on this:
      • Goal to support/inspire people, without making them feel judged while also inspiring behavior change
      • Recognizing that social determinants, such as income, insurance, and access barriers are the biggest obstacles that people face. We should be encouraging clinical teams to help PWD overcome these barriers
      • Recommendation: CME/CEU opportunity for use of language changes for clinicians so that they can better support PWD and their families
      • Recommendation: make checklist and save a QR code to easily point people to it
      • Recommendation for motivating PWD (context of supporting behavior change such as taking insulin regularly)
        • Reduce barriers/increase access
        • Understand barriers by having thoughtful conversation
        • Understand the goals of the individual. What is important to them? What do they want to get out of [behavior change that would lead to better diabetes management?]
      • Recognizing that there are sometimes different “audiences” that react differently to language use (for example PWD vs insurance companies that are being asked to cover costs for necessary supplies.)
        • Next step recommendation: draft letter to the editor of Diabetes Care so that insurers (and others) can see their part in reframing their language in how we speak about diabetes and people living with it.
      • Next steps: group is proposing that we create a checklist to help people in the Collaborative use strength-based, person-first language
        • T1DX-QI team will share link to checklist working document for comments over the next 30 days for input
      • Discussion of Ideal Visit survey results. What can we do with this information and how can we frame this to be an abstract for next ADCES conference? Recommendations:
        • Present suggestions (don’t just show the problem)
        • Combine recommendations from ideal visit and use of language so that the points are coordinated and complementary.
        • Recommendation: opportunity to show “good” and “bad” clinical experiences. Group discussed framing this into skits to be performed live at ADCES, with a few different examples showing how conversations can show what the group has learned (what to do and what not to do)
        • Next steps: T1DX-QI team will share draft language for ADCES submission for feedback
      • Next Meeting: Wednesday April 10, 2024 from 11 am – 12 pm
