PWD Advisory Committee

October 8, 2025 from 11:00-12:00 pm (EST)

In attendance: Jeniece Ilkowitz, Emily Coppedge, Nicole Rioles, Claire Rainey, Alyssa Cabrera, Stephanie Ogburn, Amy Ohmer, Lakesha McDonald, Britaney Spartz, Stacey Spirrison

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Provider letter and care plans
    • We reviewed the guidance for discussing T1D with non-diabetes specialists
    • Deleted “I have T1D and am looking for a new provider”
    • Added “I’m working with my endo and team on caring for my diabetes according to the latest research and guidelines.”
    • We can add “I have t1d- how is this health concern related to my diabetes, and can you help me with a referral to diabetes care?”
  • Reviewing the letter to the provider
    • Communicating with your provider about T1D–> maybe not a letter format. But some content would be useful. Good talking points and can be referenced during medical visits if diabetes becomes a focus unexpectedly
    • Can help patients, especially younger ones, feel more empowered to advocate for themselves
    • Need to mentally prepare for these conversations – understand that providers may not fully understand T1D
    • Making this customizable for patients and parents/guardians
    • Include language around A1C and TIR – what to do if your provider asks about these measures
      • Share an A1c or TIR standard
      • Perhaps mentioning that TIR is the preferred measurement over A1C
    • Being upfront about type 1 diabetes (T1D) is important, particularly when starting new treatments that may impact diabetes management
    • In some healthcare systems, clinicians may have easy access to a patient’s diabetes history and data
  • Action Items
    • Claire and Alyssa will incorporate feedback from this call and then share back with the PWD Advisory. Please provide any feedback by Friday, October 17th. We will finalize feedback and share back with marketing team for a final version.

Next Meeting: January 21st, 2026 from 11 am – 12 pm
