Insulin Pens for New Onset

Question:

Has anyone started to use insulin pens in the hospital for new-onset education? We used to have them but the hospital banned them a few years ago (due to safety concerns on the adult side). We would like to ask for permission to use them in the Children’s Hospital again. Thanks!

  1. We started using insulin pens in the inpatient setting in 2021, including for new onset education. We have both the humalog jr and regular kwikpen + insulin glargine pens. We can still do vial and syringe if needed. All of our pens are dispensed through central pharmacy and come with a label that meets requirements for ambulatory pharmacy dispensing (so patients can take them home at the end of the hospitalization). Happy to provide any other information about our implementation if it would be helpful (wbeaton@uwhealth.org).

  2. We do on the peds side! We have the humalog junior half unit pen- dispensed by pharmacy. Long acting is still vial and syringe unfortunately. Happy to answer questions- it was a bit of a battle getting this approved back in 2017
