- Clinic Presentation: University of Michigan, Jennifer Iyengar, MD
- University of Michigan is an academic center serving 2,500-3,000 PwT1D.
- The project team consisted of 11 individuals.
- Diabetes distress is common and a significant concern among people with Type 1 diabetes.
- Routine screening for Diabetes Distress is becoming more widespread; however, translating these screenings into effective treatment during clinical encounters remains ambiguous.
- Dr. Iyengar provided charts that showed their clinic’s improvement in screening rates which led to the realization that over one-third of patients experienced elevated diabetes-related distress. As a result, more clinicians are being encouraged to screen for DD.
- Next steps for managing these high scores create areas for further research and/or quality improvement cycles.
- Discussion occurred about time constraints and barriers to the survey, the content of the survey, and integrating it into the system.
- University of Michigan is an academic center serving 2,500-3,000 PwT1D.
- UC Davis Health Adults, Deborah Plante, MD and Berit Bagley, RN
- Dr. Deboarh Plante and Berit Bagley presented on their center’s demographics and their work on Implementing an Insulin Pump Backup Plan.
- They began their project by identifying the issue and introducing an aim statement.
- Then they surveyed their endocrine clinicians to see who was discussing backup plans during their encounters.
- Components of a backup plan and how care teams can utilize them were provided to the group.
- The team reviewed 157 patients on pump’s charts to determine who had all components of a backup plan.
- Next steps were detailed including surveying patients and clinicians while continuing with the chart review to determine intervention effectiveness.
- Discussion occurred about perhaps prescribing a smartpen as part of a backup plan, to which the group determined was a good idea. The main drawback with smartpens was running into an issue with uninsured individuals. Costs and other pain points contributing to the challenge of initiating backup plans were also discussed.
