Reducing pediatric healthcare disparities in use of technology in type 1 diabetes patients

Background/Objective: Our objective was to measure for racial/ethnic disparity among pediatric T1D patientʼs utilization of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pump (IP) technology at Nationwide Childrenʼs Hospital (NCH).

Methods: A multidisciplinary team was assembled to define, measure, and identify any disparity gap. For 9 months we measured technology use among monthly ambulatory clinic attendance of T1D patients with duration of T1D ≥12 months.

Results: Rate of patient utilization of IP technology was 31 patients per 100 visits. Compared among this 31% aggregate mean, White users averaged 37% (higher use); while Hispanic users were lower at 19% and non-Hispanic black patients use was much lower, averaging only 9%. Rate of patient utilization of CGM technology was 62 patients per 100 visits. Compared among this 62% aggregate mean, White users averaged 66% use (higher); while Hispanic users were lower at 53% and non-Hispanic black patients were much lower, averaging only 19%.
