5-year trends of obese and overweight pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes: A U.S. based multi-center study
Background: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes among children, especially among those with diabetes. The primary objective of this U.S.-based multi-center study was to examine 5-year trends in obesity rates using body-mass index (BMI) from 2016 to 2020 for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Additionally, we examined sociodemographic profiles of children in the overweight and obese category.
Methods: Electronic health records from 2016 to 2020 for all children and adolescents seeking care at eight participating endocrinology clinics in the T1D Exchange QI Collaborative were analyzed. BMI (kg/m2) was categorized into healthy, overweight, obese, and severely obese using the age and sex standardized growth charts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
